LSP were employed to complete the rainscreen façade to the Burlintgon Danes Imaging Centre in London. The screen was multi purpose in design to firstly provide solar protection to the glazed façade to the rear. The screen was part of the fire strategy for the building therefore the design period was intense.
The structure is 9 storeys in height with the ends, soffit and roof also being enclosed. The materials used are J57s grade aluminium anodised in finish with a 24mm hole punched on 33mm pitch.
All the support work was produced in stainless steel with connection details to a structural tube by way of mechanical fixings through a Ferrell.
The Alignment of the façade has been achieved with a multitude of secondary brackets to compensate for the structural steel.
All in all there was in excess of 3000 individual brackets in which certain types may only have had 1nr in requirement.
The face of the aluminium housed a machined stainless steel boss to secure the panel. This in turn was passed through a series of machined shoulder washers and spacers to interface with the bracket.
The degree of accuracy on the interface of brackets was extremely high with every component being machined for purpose rather than an off the shelf option.
The soffit, roof and end panels had to be site surveyed to ensure a perfect fit.
The screen had in excess of 20 tonnes of aluminium sheeting which was perforated in Europe and Anodised in the UK.
All Brackets where laser cut and folded as required.
In Excess of 800 panels have been installed on the made façade of the structure with precise installation to provide the shadow gaps as seen in the image above.
If peering through the screen some of the 10’s of tonnes of plant hidden by the screen can be seen, as well as this are walkways on each level.
